Viva is an exploration and a celebration of the continuing cultural phenomenon that is Elvis Presley.
For this exhibition, photographer Campbell Mitchell has investigated aspects of the seven-decade long adulation in the UK for Elvis Presely, including the inaugural Elvis Four Nations competition and the triumphal home-coming concert for the world champion Elvis Trubute Artiste, Mr. Johnny Lee Memphis. Elvis Tribute Artiste is the preferred name for Elvis impersonators within the business.
He also gained unique access to the wildly decorated homes of some of the King's most obsessive UK fans - some of whom have visited Graceland more than five times and who have turned their domestic environment into shrines to their idol.
What began as a Martin Parr-inspired look at a thriving sub-culture within the UK became a deeper and more poignant study of the tragic life and post mortem commodification of The King, the commercialisation of his music and legacy and the near-religious mania of his obsessive fan-base.
The pomp, pizazz, high camp and dedication of the UK's current best ETA's, the passion of the fans and the tawdry nature of his legacy are all captured in Campbell's images.
